Review

We first visited Dublin in March 2022. The plan was to insert a detailed building model on the waterfront as part of a drawing creation test. Development took place in two phases. An initial phase in March *where the difficulties of processing the coast were first encountered) and a second phase in July where SRTM smoothing was used for the first time.

From March to July the AS30 and Tile creation was semi-automated, but processing was done horizontally. For example, one of the (many) things we do is download data from Openstreetmap. In the horizontal model we download the data for all the AS30s we want to process. Then we move on to the next step - terrain creation. And then the next - building creation. So a batch of AS30 is taken through the steps one at a time. The current model uses vertical processing where a single AS30 is taken through all the steps. The big advantage with vertical processing is that it is easier to process multiple AS30s at the same time. One significant development during this period was the addition of many more area features. None of these were specifically done for Dublin, they appeared as a side-effect of work being done in London. The other very important improvement was the addition of a smoothing step to the SRTM data.

The most significant thing about Dublin is that it was essentially abandoned when we realised we could not handle the coast effectively. Only after the work done on Tuvalu are we ready to return to Dublin and see what the coast looks like.

• A switch from horizontal to vertical processing.
